Catania’s main square, the historical heart of the city where is the spirit of the Baroque in the beautiful town hall and Palace of the clerics as well as the imposing church of Saint’Agata, the Cathedral, dedicated to the patron saint of the city; in the Centre the famous “liotru” (the elephant) Catania’s historic symbol that, according to legend, recalls the magician Eliodoro (Diodoro) who lived in Catania and forged their own riding animal, the elephant, the lava rock; But even the Amenano fountain called sicilian’s Fontana di Trevi for the custom to throw coins inside.
The homogeneous composition of piazza Duomo and adjacent buildings is a Sicilian architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini. Porta Uzeda (1696), the Cathedral (1739), the Chiesa della Badia di Sant’Agata (1767), the fountain of the elephant (1736) and the Town Hall (1741) are all creations of Vaccarini and form a beautiful overall picture, especially at night when they are illuminated.
